Chapter 61 of The Empty City

By Andrew Looney

Friday afternoon in the offices of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was always a slow time. Many people had already left for the day, and those still around were either working very lethargically, or else were not working at all.

One man sat at his desk, reading a copy of the City Paper.

He came across an ad in the classified section that made his eyes bulge and his heart race.

"For Sale, one Atomic Bomb. $100.00 or best offer. Call 555-1449."

He shrieked, and called the ad to the attention of his colleagues. They swung into action, making calls, looking up records. Soon they had the answer.

"It's that stupid fake bomb we tracked down a few months ago. It's nothing to worry about... but we better keep the file open anyway."

The NRC office soon returned to its state of drowsy calm.

"See you on Monday," said a couple of employees, as they wandered out the door.
