A little illustration I spotted on the instant hot water unit over the communal sink, out in the hallway of my ryokan in Kyoto. Similar to a unit I first saw in Germany (although that one was electric). This one was powered with natural gas -- the main burner ignited with a whoosh just after the hot water tap was opened, and then shut off automatically, with the water.
