Chapter 62 of The Empty City

By Andrew Looney

Mandy unlocked the kitchen door of the Saturn Cafe and went in. It was 5:00. Her shift was just starting, whereas Wendy had just worked the day shift and was getting ready to go home.

"Hi, Mandy" said Wendy.

"Hi, Wendy" said Mandy.

"Hey, someone called about the Bomb."

"Oh? Who?"

"Some Arab kind of guy, I think. He had a real thick accent and I had a hard time understanding what he was saying."

"So?"

"So, he started asking me all these questions, like was it a Uranium bomb or a Plutonium bomb, and all kinds of technical stuff I didn't even understand, and finally I said it didn't really work, and you know what?"

"What?"

"He hung up on me!"

"Wow."

"I think he might have been a terrorist."

"Hmm. Well, I gotta get going."

"Yeah, OK, I'll see you later."
