Being Guests of Honor |
|
We've just gotten back from a
big trip up to Boston where we were the Special Gaming Guests
of Honor at a major science-fiction convention called Arisia,
and needless to say, we had a phenomenal time.
Being Guests of Honor is obviously extremely cool. They gave
us the red carpet treatment, putting us up in the Presidential
Suite (with some of the other GoHs), giving us gift boxes and
treats and inviting us to a dinner with the other big shots.
The program book featured a multi-page article about us, complete
with a full-page photo,
which meant that we were frequently recognized and treated as
VIPs everywhere we went. It was a hoot!
We spent the whole weekend running from place to place. We
were on discussion panels, we hosted a game show, and on Saturday,
I worked an 8 hour shift as the waiter in our Pop Tart Cafe.
Check out the scrapbook
for the full report.
Our panels were all well attended, with my Saturday afternoon
talk on game design being positively crowded. Fortunately, for
those of you who could not attend, I have a written
version of that talk which I've posted here this week. (On
the other hand, only those in attendance got to hear the secret
ideas I've been contemplating for a Chrononauts expansion...)
I was so busy I didn't get to see any of Alison's sketch-off
with other artists (called "Dueling Easels") and missed
most of Kristin's talk (on Publishing a Game), but from what
I could tell, like everything else, it was all great fun.
So overall, I think we'd have to say that being among the
Guest of Honors was terrific. We look forward to doing it again
someday.
But as if all that weren't enough fun for one weekend, we
also made the trip home memorable by stopping off to visit the
founders of Cosmic Wimpout, whom we've admired from afar for
lo these many years but have never met until now. Check out the
travelogue
for details of this pilgrimage.

Arisia was held in the same hotel
where, in 1983, I played in the first-ever Live Action Role-Playing
game: Rekon-1. Wandering around those hallways and function rooms
again brought back many memories... perhaps my favorite was the
somewhat-famous moment when I beat the rap for Negligent Genocide,
19 years ago, in the very same room where Fluxx and Volcano tournaments
were being run this weekend. |

The new governor of Maryland, Republican Bob
Erhlich, has announced his support for decriminalizing
medical marijuana! (Dude, if you'd said that sooner, I would
have considered voting for you.) |

I can't wait to try the new Almond
Snickers which I've seen advertised. I've never been big on Snickers,
but with almonds instead of peanuts it could be just what I was
wishing for on 12/6/1
(though actually, if you can find them, Russell Stovers' Almond
Clusters are really quite perfect already...) |
